The labels, explained once
How we know
Nearly every row on this site says how sure it is. This page says what each of those words means, where you will meet it, and what it would take to change one.

Each bar is one kind of record split by its grades, every bar drawn to the same full width, so read them for proportions and the printed numbers for size. Solid is the firmest grade a kind of record has, hollow the least firm, and a dashed edge is sources that disagree.
How we know: The counts this page prints under each heading below, read off the same records.
On a rulebook row
Rows on the Racing pages are read from a named rulebook, edition and section. 717 rows are held today.
- Confirmed (710)
- Read from the rulebook's own text and held to it.
- Reported (1)
- Recorded from the document without that check. A figure on a reported row is always printed with the rulebook's own words beside it.
- Disputed (6)
- The rulebook contradicts itself on this point, and the row's note says how.
On a history section
Each of the 13 racing history chapters grades every section it prints, 71 sections in all.
- Confirmed (50)
- Shown by a primary document, or by two secondary ones.
- Likely (15)
- Resting on one source, with nothing found against it.
- Contested (6)
- The sources disagree, and every side is printed with the source that says it.
On a timeline or a model row
The origins milestones and the games list use all four words. A model row uses two. Verified means a check against the maker's own document, which the row names, and an engine figure; a row resting on an archived page, a parts catalogue or a second-hand reference stays unverified however well sourced it is. 98 of 1254 model rows are verified today.
- Confirmed
- Two independent sources of medium grade or better agree, or one manufacturer says it about its own product.
- Likely
- One good source and nothing contradicting it.
- Contested
- The sources disagree, and all of them are printed beside the entry.
- Unverified
- What is on file meets none of the definitions above. A row marked this way is not a finding.
In the Yamaha News index
These say how much of an issue has been read, not whether it is right. The words are the index page's own.
- Full issue read (25)
- The issue has a text layer and was read end to end.
- Index read and confirmed (10)
- The issue's own contents page was read and names the entry.
- Named in the index only (41)
- The index names it and nobody has opened the article, so a model missing from it proves nothing.
- Issue number disputed (0)
- Two passes over the scans disagree about which issue this is.
On a tuning page
A spec table grades its figures as a whole, by the source they came from. 6 tables are held today.
- High (5)
- From the part maker's own published document: its catalogue, chart or manual.
- Medium (1)
- Sources that agree with each other, where the maker's own document was not read as published.
- Low (0)
- One second-hand source, or one old enough that parts have changed since. Check before you order.
In a culture piece
Each of the 10 sections in the culture pieces grades itself: confirmed (7) when the rulebook or document it cites says it outright, reported (3) when the sources it cites support it without saying it outright, contested (0) when the sources disagree and each side is printed.
On an event page
An edition of an event is only as good as the record that names it. The 33 editions held rest on these.
- A result sheet (8)
- The results themselves, which is the only record that could be counted.
- The organiser's own page or post (13)
- Says the race ran, but not who entered.
- The press (8)
- A report of the race, as good as the reporter.
- This project's research (0)
- Pieced together from several partial mentions.
- A tape's title (4)
- An uploader's label on a video, printed greyed.
In the glossary
A glossary word's grade says how strongly a named source carries it; the glossary's Sighted in column says what kind of source that is. Confirmed: A named source carries the term itself. Likely: A named source supports the thing but does not carry the term, or the only example is this project's own research. Contested: The sources disagree, or one sighting stands alone and unconfirmed. The note on the row says which. The full list is in the glossary.
On a legality check
A legality check is one part the shop sells against one class of one sanctioning body, with the rulebook year, section and source where the record holds them. 56 checks are held, listed under class legality.
Moving a row up
Every grade above changes the same way: with a document. If you hold a rulebook edition, a results sheet, a maker's publication or a magazine that settles a row, send it to us and name the page. The row is corrected with a dated note rather than rewritten, so the change stays visible, and nobody is named for it without their permission.
