Rulebooks
Racing
How the sport is run, as the people who run it have written it down. 11 pages sit under this heading and every one is built. Each reads the published rulebooks of IJSBA, UIM and IHRA and cites the body, the edition and the section, so any sentence can be checked against the document in a couple of minutes.
Which of these do you want?
| Page | Answers | Rests on | Size and certainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| New to racing? Start here Built | The whole path into a first race, in the order a rider meets it, from watching one to reading the result. | The same three rulebooks as every row below, with each step citing the rule it rests on. | 7 steps, each linking the pages that go further. |
| How the sport is organised Built | Who the three sanctioning bodies are, what each rulebook is, what governs when rules conflict, and a directory of the other bodies that run the sport. | The three rulebooks themselves (IJSBA 2025, UIM 2026, IHRA 2026) and, for the directory, registers and the bodies' own documents. | 3 bodies read, 12 documents cited, 40 organisations listed. |
| Riders: tiers, licences, ages Built | What a rider has to be, hold and have signed before entering, and how the tiers advance. | IJSBA Competition Membership, UIM governance rules, IHRA rider eligibility. | 8 classes carry a licence rule, 10 carry rider requirements. |
| Equipment and scrutineering Built | What the rider wears, what the craft must carry, and what an inspector looks at before and after a race. | IJSBA general competition rules, UIM personal equipment and scrutineering, IHRA inspection. | 3 bodies, eleven items compared, the UIM 506.10 reference settled on 2026-09-26. |
| Race numbers Built | How big, where, what colour, and who assigns them. | UIM race number rules, IJSBA racing numbers, IHRA section D. | Three rulebooks, and the IJSBA one splits placement from figures. |
| Formats and disciplines Built | Closed course, slalom, endurance, offshore, freestyle, drag: what each is and how it is judged. | IJSBA event types and general rules, UIM class formats, IHRA racing types. | 7 classes state a format, 4 state how they are judged. |
| The race weekend Built | Registration to the checkered flag: starts, restarts, buoys, flags, pits, changing craft, endurance. | IJSBA GEN.1 to GEN.15, IHRA sections D, E and G, UIM 300-series and 504, each rule with its section. | 267 rules. |
| Scoring, protests, penalties, appeals Built | How motos score, how to protest, what it costs, and where an appeal goes. | UIM 308 to 319 and 403 to 409, IHRA E.13 and F, IJSBA SCOR.1 to SCOR.23 of its 2025 scoring document, held since 2 October 2026, with the 2018 text read beside it. | 210 rules from three bodies; the IHRA rulebook prints no penalty schedule, recorded as an absence in that document. |
| Events Built | The World Finals, the tours and the races, edition by edition where a document exists. | Result sheets, the organisers' own pages, the press, and, where that is all there is, a tape's title, each row saying which. | 7 events, 33 documented editions, none counted yet. |
| How the sport got here Built | How the sport, its bodies, its classes and its regulation got to where they are, chapter by chapter. | Graded sources, one table for the whole history, every section cited; the claims the research could not source are listed as held back. | 13 chapters, 71 sections, 83 claims held back. |
| Classes in plain words Built | What Stock, Limited and GP mean, where a rulebook defines them, and where it only uses them. | The 73 class records already on the legality pages. | 60 name eligible craft, 13 a minimum weight, 44 a sound limit. |
This section is about the sport. Whether a particular part is legal in a particular class is the other question the same rulebooks answer, and it has its own tree at Class Legality. If a rule you raced under is missing or read wrongly here, say so and name the section: the page prints the edition it read so the two can be compared.
