The eras this page's records fall in are drawn solid; the others are hollow.
How we know: Each bar runs the years printed on that era's panel, and which eras a page falls in is the archive's grouping of its records, not the length of anyone's career.

1987 · Likely
Personal Watercraft Illustrated, volume 2 number 1 (1988), read only as search highlights, prints Richard Payne second under a Freestyle list. The highlights print no event heading beside it; the archive reads it, from the issue's own pointer to its results section, as a result of the 1987 IJSBA World Finals, which is an inference.

1987 · Likely
The issue's rankings, headed Final 1987 IJSBA World Rankings, print 9, Richard Payne, beside an abbreviation of an Australian state; the highlights run several ranking tables together, so the table he is ranked in is not known. Australian Penthouse of November 1988 says he was then the only foreigner on the 20-man pro tour of the American race circuit, currently ranked ninth in the world as a racer and second as a freestyler. Reading the two as one rider rests on the name, Australia and a ninth place in both, which is the archive's inference.

Australian Penthouse of November 1988 carries a feature on riding waves on a jet ski, The New Wave, whose contents-page summary says that Richard Payne, in words that grade him and are not repeated here, gave an exhibition in big surf for the magazine's photographer. The lines held print no date or place for the exhibition.

What the archive has not read (2)
- No IJSBA result sheet from the 1980s has been found (searched archive.org's full text and 645 issues of Cycle News from 1980 to 1992, 2026-10-07), so no result is read off a sheet. The association's champions page, a finding aid, lists a Richard Payne of Australia in its Amateur Freestyle table for 1985; no other document read names him for 1985 (searched the archive's mirror and research cache, 2026-10-07).
- Personal Watercraft Illustrated volume 2 number 1 can be read only as archive.org search highlights, because the item's files are gone (checked 2026-10-07). The highlights print no event heading beside the Freestyle list used here. The issue says its Racing Review section carries the full World Finals results, and it also prints the heading of a Personal Watercraft Federation race at Ventura, California, of 9 November 1987, so reading the list as a World Finals result is the archive's inference.

- PWI 1988 search text: 1987 racing (archive.org): Personal Watercraft Illustrated volume 2 number 1 of 1988 (archive.org full-text search highlights: results section, 1987 results and rankings, racer mentions), Personal Watercraft Illustrated, read through the Internet Archive's full-text search, 1988; enthusiast media, medium. Search highlights from the same emptied item as the PWI February 1988 search text: short OCR passages around the term searched, not the pages, and not in page order. They hold the issue's pointers to its results section (the Racing Review, which it says carries the full World Finals results, and a heading there for a Personal Watercraft Federation race at Ventura, California, of 9 November 1987), results lines whose class headings are partly cut and whose event heading is not printed beside them, passages whose shared words give the order in which the scan prints those lists, the rankings headed Final 1987 IJSBA World Rankings with several tables run together, a caption on X-2 results, a feature on Jet Ski Bay, and the caption that names Bill Chapin. Medium as a period magazine read as highlights only. Places beside names and the names of four riders the archive leaves out under its minors rule are replaced in the held copy. The link opens the item's archive.org page; the highlights were read through the full-text search, as the held copy says.
- Australian Penthouse Nov 1988 jet ski feature (held here, not public): Australian Penthouse, November 1988, The New Wave, words by Greg Hunter, photography by Peter Crawford (OCR excerpt), Australian Penthouse, 1988-11; editorial, medium. Lines about one feature in an Australian men's magazine, from the issue's raw OCR: the contents-page entry and summary, which say Richard Payne gave an exhibition in big surf for the photographer, and one passage saying he was the only foreigner on the 20-man pro tour of the American race circuit, ranked ninth in the world as a racer and second as a freestyler. Medium as a period magazine feature; its grading words are the magazine's and are not used. Nothing else from the issue is copied, and a passage outside his public role is removed. The row points at the held excerpt, not at the scanned issue.
