The eras this page's records fall in are drawn solid; the others are hollow.

How we know: Each bar runs the years printed on that era's panel, and which eras a page falls in is the archive's grouping of its records, not the length of anyone's career.

Design and invention

2006 and 2007 · Confirmed

US patent 7,270,583, High efficiency watercraft propulsion system, filed on 28 November 2006 and granted on 18 September 2007, names him as inventor and Solas Science & Engineering Co., Ltd as assignee. Its first claim sets an impeller in a concavity formed in the hull with a stator behind it, and a later claim gives the nozzle a diameter only slightly less than the impeller's housing.

1990 and 1992 · Confirmed

US patent 5,116,202, Impeller, filed on 25 July 1990 and granted on 26 May 1992, names him as inventor. It claims an impeller for the nozzle of a motorboat whose leading end is a truncated cone, with a tool for screwing it to the shaft that drives it.

1997, 1998 and 1999 · Confirmed

Three later patents name him as inventor. US 5,871,381 and US 5,876,257, both titled Stator of propelling system of small powerboat, were filed in 1997 and granted in February and March 1999; each claims a stator behind the propeller leading into the nozzle of a boat's water channel. US 5,975,966, Propelling system of small boat, filed in 1998 and granted in November 1999, claims a gap between impeller blades and stator vanes that adjusts with the jet flow.

1995, 1996, 1999 and 2007 · Likely

Three patents of 1995 and 1996 print the inventor as Solas Y. J. Lin: US 5,451,143, Motorboat impeller, US 5,509,785, Impeller of motorboat, and US 5,540,605, Water inlet foil grating of motorboat. They print the same city as his patents of 1999 and 2007, and reading them as his rests on that, the initials and the subject, an inference. The grating patent lists US 5,234,361 among its references and sets its wing-shaped grating against that patent's grating.

Business

2007 · Likely

Solas's own About page, captured in October 2015, says the company was founded in 1985 by Dr. Solas Y. J. Lin and describes it as a maker of outboard and stern drive propellers. That is the company's own account. Reading its founder as the inventor of these patents rests on the same initials as above and on the 2007 patent's assignment to Solas Science & Engineering, a company of the same name, an inference.

What the archive has not read (4)

  • The printed patents were not read. The texts held are USPTO's Patent Public Search records, so the claims are described here rather than quoted (checked 2026-10-05).
  • No document read says whether any of these patents became a Solas product (checked 2026-10-05, the eight patents and the company's 2015 About page).
  • The founding year of 1985 rests on the company's own page; no registry or period document held dates the company's start (searched the archive's mirror and research cache, 2026-10-05).
  • Patents assigned to Solas Science & Engineering after 2007 turned up in the archive's patent searches and were not read (checked 2026-10-05).
