The aftermarket: pumps, plates, mats and the registers

In plain words. Pumps, grates, ride plates and traction mats came from specialist makers. This chapter sets out what trademark and patent records, trade magazines and the makers' own pages show of seven of them, then counts the sixteen patents it ties to five of them, fifteen filed by 1998, and what its stated register searches returned.

Impellers, intake grates, ride plates and deck mats were sold by specialist makers, and most of the documents cited here about those makers are register records. This chapter sets out what those records, trade articles and the makers' own pages show of Skat-Trak, Solas, R&D, Jet Dynamics, Ocean Pro, Worx Racing Components and Hydro-Turf, then counts the patents and trademark records that its stated searches returned.

Words on this page (3)
Aftermarket Part
A part that replaces an original one or is used in addition to it, and is not limited to providing the same function as its OEM counterpart. That is the 2010 glossary saying plainly what the 2002 one implied.
pump cover plate
IJSBA's name for the ride plate in its class documents. The Ski Lites rule allows a modified or aftermarket one within stated limits on width and extension, with no fins, rudders or skegs on it
ride plate
The flat plate that covers the cut-out in the hull for the jet pump, which the craft rides on; a shop's tuning notes report that the choice of plate trades smooth-water top speed against control and handling. IHRA calls it both the ride plate and the pump cover, and IJSBA's class documents name it the pump cover plate in their plate rules but also say ride plate in the trim tab rules that bar trim tabs attached to it. Both books bound how far an aftermarket one may extend past the original.

Impellers and pumps: Skat-Trak and Solas

Confirmed

Skat-Trak and Solas are two of the names the held documents attach to the part that spins in the pump. Skat-Trak's own page of 1998 says the company designs racing and recreational equipment for watercraft and off-road riders and builds impellers daily, and those are the company's claims. Group K, in comments on the magazines printed on its own pages, wrote under a January 1996 issue that Skat Trak "now offers" smaller-hubbed "Slimline" props and a new "Swirl" line, and under an April 1997 issue that swirl props were by then made only by Skat Trak. The Watercraft Journal, in an article of August 2014 on the company's factory, described impellers, stators and intake grates cast from wax patterns and Magnum Pumps built to a customer's specification. It wrote that the company began with custom paddle tires for dune buggies, sand rails and ATVs, "stepped into offering impellers by the early 1980s", and that the tires were the far larger side of the business. The association's associate member list of 9 March 2005 names Skat-Trak at Calimesa, and its present page, stamped 2017, names it again. By a letter that The Watercraft Journal printed on 21 December 2022, the company's president said it would stop making watercraft parts, as the chapter on hulls, rule books and closures tells. Solas's dated record is mostly the register's. The SOLAS mark for marine propellers was filed on 7 December 1987, claiming first use on 1 April 1987. Jet pump systems first appear among goods in 1995, in JETPRO, abandoned in 1997; GOLD PRO followed in 1998 and was abandoned in 2001. SOLAS, filed on 16 August 2005 and registered on 7 November 2006, covers, among other goods, jet pump systems of shafts, intake grates, tracts, impellers, stators and nozzles for marine vehicles, with use in commerce claimed from September 1998; the registry's words are marine vehicles, not personal watercraft. Group K's comments on issues of 1996 and 1997 name Solas impellers by letter pitch and a "Super Camber" series. The company's page of 2015 says it was founded in 1985 and describes propellers; its present profile also lists personal watercraft parts, among them impellers, jet pumps and intake grates. The register's earliest record is the 1987 application, and no held document reaches back to 1985 (searched the archive's mirror and research cache, 2026-10-06), so the founding year stays the company's claim. A later impeller name, ADONIS, was filed on 10 August 2022 by Short Block Technologies, which claims first use on 2 August 2016. The association's post of 16 May 2023 describes the company as a maker of remanufactured personal watercraft engines, formed in 1997 by Greg Pickren, which reads like the company's own telling, and its post of 25 November 2024 calls it part of a group that includes Adonis Impellers. The Watercraft Journal called CJ Lammers the company's president in March 2016.

Intake grates and ride plates: R&D, Jet Dynamics, Ocean Pro and Worx Racing Components

Confirmed

R&D's earliest register record for grates is from the early 1990s. The AQUAVEIN mark, for foiled gratings for personal watercraft, was filed on 19 January 1993 by an individual trading as R & D Racing USA, with first use claimed for 16 December 1992. Two marks of 1994 for foiled jet gratings followed, and in 1995 the corporation, R & D Racing Products U.S.A., Inc., filed for a flame arrester. Personal Watercraft's profile of April 2008 reports R&D naming the Aqua Vein intake grate among its aftermarket products, and describes ride plates, flame arresters and drop nozzles on its shelves. A BRP patent lists, among references cited by its applicant, web pages titled "Aquavien Pro Shoe/Grate 2002" and "R&D Grate 2004", which the applicant retrieved in November 2009, and a patent granted in 2010 lists catalog pages of 1 September 2009 for R&D Aquavein and Worx Racing Maxiloader intake grates. Jet Dynamics' mark record claims first use on 30 April 1989, an owner's claim; the earliest dated filing held is a related patent application of 12 December 1989, followed by a toploader patent filed in 1991 for a plate that divides the pump inlet and shields the drive shaft. The Times-News of Twin Falls reported on 8 March 1992 that two veteran jet boat racers, Glen Dilworth and Don Moyle, had formed the company to make and market their inventions; the company's page says 1990 and calls itself home of the Shaft Shielding Toploader and Concave Rideplate. A grating patent filed in 1992 by Glenn Dickinson and Bill Chapin, whom Personal Watercraft's profile of 2008 places at R&D, lists a Jet Dynamics advertisement in Jet Sports among its references; the patent names no company. Group K's comment on the July 1997 issue of Watercraft Power says it abated the high-speed instability of its 1130 Ventures with beach house sponsons and a Jet Dynamics ride plate, and adds that Jet Dynamics did not yet make a plate for the Venture, so it modified and shimmed a Blaster ride plate to fit. Ocean Pro's record is the register's. Its 1987 application lists ride plates among the parts of single person recreation jet boats; VORTEX, for flame arrestors for personal watercraft engines, was filed in 1994, and Group K's comment on the July 1997 Splash flame-arrestor test notes that Ocean Pro arrestors were absent from it. The earliest printed date for Worx in the held documents is on catalog pages of 1 September 2009 that a patent lists, one of them for "Worx Racing Maxiloader" grates; an undated Group K page on the Kawasaki SXi Pro 750, which discusses the 2002 model, also names a Worx ride plate and scoop grate (searched the archive's mirror and research cache, 2026-10-06). Worx's own page says Worx Racing was established in 1996 and builds parts in Australia, a claim of its own; the Australian Business Register shows the business name Worx Racing Components registered on 2 November 2023 to a private company whose ABN is active from 2000.

Traction mats: Hydro-Turf and what a document holds of its start

Confirmed

The HYDRO-TURF mark for watercraft mats first appears in the register on 1 October 1990, when Pacific Creations, Inc., a California corporation, applied for synthetic foam non-slip floor mats for use on watercraft, claiming first use on 3 May 1990; an earlier mark of the same words, for landscape sprayers, registered in 1977 and cancelled in 1983, names a different owner and different goods. The mark registered on 24 March 1992 and has been renewed three times, the last in 2021. A directory of 2015 lists Pacific Creations Inc with the trade name Hydro-Turf in Anaheim, and its search highlights print Arno Olbricht as president in that entry; the association's lists of 2005 and 2017 name Hydro-Turf under the same town. In October 1992 the same registrant applied for a design mark for foam non-slip deck and floor pads for personal watercraft, sailboats and sail-equipped surfboards; it was cancelled in 2000. Hydro-Turf's own page says the company began in the 1980s as Jet Strip and relaunched as Hydro-Turf in 1990 under its president, Arno Olbricht, and The Watercraft Journal wrote in July 2014 that the brand was once known as Jet-Strip before its official launch in 1990. No registry record holds the name Jet Strip for mats: the one JET-STRIP mark in the register is a paint remover filed in 1960 (searched 2026-10-06), so the earlier company rests on the company's page and two trade articles that may repeat it: Powersports Business wrote in February 2013 that Jet Strip was bought and became Hydro-Turf after a switch to EVA foam. Marks of a corporation of the same name, filed in 1982 and 1985, are for sweaters and shirts, and the records do not show whether it was the same business. Later documents add dates. A Polaris design patent filed on 13 February 2003 cites photographs of May 2003 of footwell pad specimens received from Hydro-Turf of Anaheim, which it calls a distributor of various watercraft accessories. The company's page and the Watercraft Journal both date the HT Moto line to 2008; HYDRO TURF, LLC of Florida registered HYDRO-TURF in 2022 for fitted seat covers for marine vehicles, claiming first use of those goods on 1 December 2008, and claimed ownership of the 1990 registration, whose record now names that company as owner. The association's post of 25 November 2024 also names Hydro-Turf as part of a group that includes Short Block Technologies. Powersports Business and The Watercraft Journal reported in October 2020, printing the same release, that Greg Pickren had acquired Hydro-Turf from Arno Olbricht, whom the release calls its founder, and that the company would move to Clearwater, Florida, in the first quarter of 2021. The company's page says it moved there in 2021.

The patents of the parts trade

Likely

Sixteen US patents whose records are held can be read as the work of five makers, by an assignee's or an inventor's name: eight Solas, four Jet Dynamics, two R&D, and one each Ocean Pro and Factory Pipe. They were filed between 6 September 1988 and 28 November 2006, fifteen of them by 1998. Twelve are utility patents and four are designs, for a ride plate, a skid plate, an intake grate and a fluid flow directing element. Seven of the twelve concern impellers, stators or propulsion systems, all naming Yeun-Junn Lin or, in two, Solas Y. J. Lin, whom the archive reads as the same inventor; four concern intake gratings and toploaders, filed by Glenn Dickinson with Bill Chapin (1992, 1993), by Don Moyle with Glen Dilworth (1991) and by Solas Y. J. Lin (1994); and one, by Ross Liberty (1998), concerns water injected into a two-stroke exhaust. The ride plate design of 1988 is in the name of Kenneth F. Klus, who registered the OCEAN PRO marks. Only Lin's filing of 28 November 2006 prints a company as assignee, Solas Science & Engineering. The other fifteen name individuals, so each tie is a reading from names, subjects and trademark records; the register holds a mark of 1993 for foiled gratings in the name of an individual trading as R & D Racing USA, which fits the Dickinson and Chapin patents without proving them. The Jet Dynamics reading rests on its mark record, which names the two partners, Glen L. Dilworth and Don R. Moyle, whom the patents name as inventors, and the R&D reading on the two names that R&D's own page of 1998 and Personal Watercraft's profile of 2008 give for the company. The patents cite one another: the Dickinson and Chapin grating patent, filed in 1992, lists the toploader patent read here as Jet Dynamics'; the Lin patent of 1994 lists both and sets its wing-shaped grating against them; the skid plate design read as Jet Dynamics' lists the ride plate design of 1988; and a BRP patent filed in 2013 lists the toploader patent and the Lin patent of 1994 among references cited by its applicant. Of the sixteen, the only one filed after 1998 is the Solas patent of 2006. Google Patents, queried on 6 October 2026 for the assignee Solas Science, returns 68 patent documents filed from 1996 to 2025, eight of them US documents filed from 2001 to 2020 and titled for propellers, propulsion systems and an electric outboard drive; the list omits US 7,270,583, so it undercounts, and the site stopped answering before assignee queries for the other makers could be run. No patent turned up for Skat-Trak, Worx or Hydro-Turf (searched USPTO Patent Public Search and Google Patents by assignee and inventor name, 2026-10-05).

The trademark records of the parts makers

Confirmed

The US trademark register was searched on 6 October 2026, and its records show a different pattern for each maker in this chapter. The register's goods text, searched with six queries for ride plates, intake grates, foiled gratings, impellers and jet pump systems, returned 85 records, among them marks of machine makers and of unrelated goods, so this section prints no total from them. First-use dates in these records are the owners' sworn claims, not findings. Ocean Pro's registrant filed the OCEAN PRO PRODUCTS mark in 1987 and its registration was cancelled in 2009 for want of an acceptable Section 8 declaration, while OCEAN PRO and VORTEX, both filed in 1994, have been renewed. The R&D marks show how long a registration can run. AQUAVEIN of 1993 and two marks of 1994 were each renewed once, in 2003 or 2005, and cancelled in 2016, 2017 and 2020; the corporation's flame arrester mark of 1995 was cancelled in 2003. A cancellation dates the end of a registration and not of a business: JET DYNAMICS was cancelled in 2004, and a page the company publishes, read on 5 October 2026, offers a toploader grate and a ride plate. Six of the 42 marks in Solas's name list jet pump systems among their goods, from 1995 to 2005, and five of the six were abandoned. Other Solas marks name impellers beside jet boats, among them AMITA of 1996 and IPOP of 2011, so the six are a count of one wording and not of every Solas mark that touches the pump. Among the records the goods queries returned, four marks, each from a different owner, come from firms that no other held text mentions apart from the register records themselves: SEANAIR of 1994, two JETLYNE marks of 1987 and 1995, and WAVEWERX of 2013 (searched the archive's mirror and research cache, 2026-10-06). Two names that other documents attach to the same parts have no mark in these searches. Among 51 hits for the token SKAT none carries Skat-Trak's name as wordmark or owner, and none of the WORX marks names watercraft goods, grates, ride plates or impellers or joins WORX to RACING or COMPONENTS (searched by wordmark and owner name, 2026-10-06). Marks in Australia, where Worx Racing Components trades, were not searched.

Not covered, and why (7)

Solas was founded in 1985 by Dr. Solas Y. J. Lin.
The archive prints no founding history for Solas unless a primary document turns up. Only the company's own page says 1985, in its 2015 capture and its present profile. The earliest registry record found is the application of 7 December 1987 (USPTO trademark search, 2026-10-06, and TSDR, 2026-10-05), and Taiwan's company registry was not searched. The impellers and pumps section says whose claim the year is.
R&D is the oldest aftermarket manufacturer in the industry.
A superlative in Personal Watercraft's profile of April 2008 that cites no source. R&D's own page of 1998 says 1972, the profile itself dates its personal watercraft work to 1982, and other makers' sworn first-use claims in the register go back to 1978 (Ocean Pro, in an application abandoned in 1991) and 1983 (Seanair), so the ranking cannot be checked from the held documents (checked 2026-10-06).
More World and National Jet Sports Championships have been won with Skat-Trak impellers than all other impeller manufacturers combined.
Skat-Trak's own page of 1998 says it. It is a company's claim about itself, no held document tallies titles by impeller maker, and the sentence is a grade in effect, so it is not printed (checked 2026-10-06).
Skat-Trak has made products for more than 60 years, beginning with paddle tires, and began offering impellers by the early 1980s.
The first part is a trade writer's statement of 2014 with no source, and the brand's current page gives other dates of its own (1968 for snowmobile conversion kits, more than 70 years). The impellers and pumps section prints the 1980s sentence as the writer's statement only (checked 2026-10-06).
Hydro-Turf began in the 1980s as Jet Strip and relaunched under its present name in 1990.
Printed only as the company's account and two articles'. No registry record holds the name Jet Strip for mats, and the HYDRO-TURF application of 1 October 1990 is the earliest document held for mats (checked 2026-10-06).
Jet Dynamics was founded in 1990 and one partner acquired all rights to it in 1998.
Both statements are on the company's own page. The mark record claims first use on 30 April 1989, which is the owner's claim, and the earliest dated documents held are a patent application of 12 December 1989 and a newspaper caption of 8 March 1992 that says the partners have formed the company (checked 2026-10-06).
Worx Racing was established in 1996.
The company's own page is the only document that says so. The earliest printed date for Worx in any held document is a catalog page of 1 September 2009 listed in a patent record, and an undated Group K page about the Kawasaki SXi Pro 750 names a Worx ride plate and scoop grate (checked 2026-10-06).

What could not be read (9)

  • No document read dates Skat-Trak's founding or the year it began making impellers, beyond The Watercraft Journal's statements of 27 August 2014 (it began offering impellers by the early 1980s) and 21 December 2022 (the company has been a participant in the development of impellers and pumps since the 1980s), neither of which cites a source, and the brand's own page, which gives 1968 for snowmobile conversion kits and more than 70 years in business (searched the archive's mirror and research cache, 2026-10-06). No Skat-Trak trademark turned up under SKAT TRAK, SKATTRAK or SKAT-TRAK as wordmark or owner name (USPTO trademark search, 2026-10-06), and no patent turned up for it under its name or its president's (searched USPTO Patent Public Search and Google Patents by assignee and inventor name, 2026-10-05).
  • No registry or period document held dates Solas before its trademark application of 7 December 1987, so the 1985 founding stays the company's claim. Taiwan's company registry was not searched, and the printed texts of Solas's patents were not read, so their subjects are described from the titles and abstracts in USPTO records (checked 2026-10-06).
  • R&D's own page of 1998 says the company was established in 1972, Personal Watercraft's profile of April 2008 dates its personal watercraft work to 1982 and a principal's arrival to the end of 1987, and The Watercraft Journal of 5 September 2018 says over 30 years, so the grates and plates section prints no start year for R&D (checked 2026-10-06). The earliest dated R&D trademark record held is the AQUAVEIN application of 19 January 1993, with first use claimed for 16 December 1992, and a grating patent filed on 10 November 1992 that the chapter reads as R&D's names no company.
  • The founding of Jet Dynamics in 1990, and the acquisition of all rights by one partner in 1998, rest on the company's own page. The mark record claims first use on 30 April 1989, and the earliest dated filing held is a related patent application of 12 December 1989. The Times-News of 8 March 1992 says only that the two partners have formed the company. The drawings of the three design patents were not read, so no shape is described (checked 2026-10-06).
  • The year 1996 and the claim of Australian manufacture for Worx Racing Components rest on the company's own page. No mark or patent turned up in the US register or in the patent searches of 2026-10-05 and 2026-10-06, and the registers of Australia, Taiwan and Europe were not searched. An Australian news post about a change of owner of Worx, first captured by the Wayback Machine on 2012-12-01, gave no readable text when it was saved during research, so it is a lead and not a source.
  • Hydro-Turf's own page, a Powersports Business feature of February 2013 and one article of July 2014 name the earlier company Jet Strip, and both articles may repeat the company's telling; no registry record holds the name for mats. Whether the Pacific Creations, Inc. that filed marks for sweaters and shirts in 1982 and 1985 is the same business as the HYDRO-TURF registrant of 1990, which bears the same name, is not shown by any document held. No document held other than the company's page says when it moved to Clearwater, Florida; the reports of October 2020 say only that it would, and the register logs a change of owner address on 8 March 2021 and prints no address (checked 2026-10-06; the reports read 2026-10-07).
  • The assignee searches for Skat-Trak, Worx Racing Components, R&D and Jet Dynamics could not be repeated on 2026-10-06, because Google Patents refused further queries after about ten. The statement that no patent turned up for Skat-Trak, Worx or Hydro-Turf therefore rests on the searches of 2026-10-05, whose result lists are not held.
  • The goods-text search of the US register on 2026-10-06 used six queries and returned 85 records, among them marks of machine makers and of unrelated goods, and this chapter prints no total from them. The queries did not return every mark that names these parts: seven Solas marks whose goods name impellers beside jet boats (AMITA, RUBEX, IPOP, PROL3, PROL4, a SOLAS mark of 2019 and HYDRO JET) were not among them. Marks that name other parts (mats, hulls, pipes, steering) or use other words, and every mark outside the US, are not covered. The 397 records for the token WORX were not listed and were tested with targeted queries.
  • Group K's two comment pages are the shop's current pages, and no earlier capture of them is held, so their dating rests on their headings and issue-by-issue layout; the Wayback Machine's index, as saved during research, lists only a 2005 capture of the shop's old About page (checked 2026-10-06).

  • US patent 6026641 (patents.google.com): US patent 6,026,641, Method and apparatus for improved control of exhaust gas temperature from a two-stroke engine (USPTO record), United States Patent and Trademark Office, 2000-02-22; government, high. The background calls ECWI a system developed by the applicant. An earlier filing by another company covers electronically controlled water injection too, so no page calls this a first. (as US patent 5114368 above)
  • Google Patents Solas assignee list (patents.google.com): Google Patents result list, assignee Solas Science (read 2026-10-06), Google Patents, an index of patent documents, 2026-10-06; project research, medium. A list of 68 patent documents of all offices that Google Patents returned for the assignee Solas Science on 2026-10-06, with filing and grant dates and titles, held here as an extract. It is an index and a lower bound: it does not list US 7,270,583, whose USPTO record names the company as assignee. Medium for the count and the dates; the patents' own texts are not held.
  • USPTO record serial 74529118 (tsdr.uspto.gov): Trademark Status and Document Retrieval record, serial 74529118, registration 1977631 (FACTORY PIPE), United States Patent and Trademark Office, 1996-06-04; government, high. • R&D Racing Products page 1998 (web.archive.org): About R&D, rd-performance.com (Wayback capture of 30 May 1998), R&D Racing Products, USA Inc.; manufacturer primary, medium. The company's welcome letter, signed Bill Chapin, President, and Glenn Dickinson/CEO. Medium for who signed for the company and with what title in 1998; its history (established in 1972) and its claims for its racing record are the company's own and no page relies on them.
  • USPTO goods sweep Oct 2026 (tmsearch.uspto.gov): USPTO tmsearch records, goods-text sweep for watercraft under-hull and pump parts marks (read 2026-10-06), United States Patent and Trademark Office, 2026-10-06; government, high. Our extract of USPTO's own trademark search records, read on 2026-10-06 through the search's JSON endpoint with a browser user agent. It prints the six goods-text queries, the rule by which 29 marks were kept from the 85 records returned, and each kept mark's dates, status, owner as printed and goods. High for what the register records. The count it supports is a count of what these queries returned, not of every mark in the trade.
  • USPTO record serial 74613791 (tsdr.uspto.gov): Trademark Status and Document Retrieval record, serial 74613791, registration 2005577 (OCEAN PRO), United States Patent and Trademark Office, 1996-10-08; government, high. OCEAN PRO, filed 22 December 1994, registered 8 October 1996, renewed, for marine engine parts and jet boat parts. Registrant KLUS, KENNETH F.; current owner Atlantis Investments, Inc., a California corporation. The record does not date the change of owner.

Changes to this chapter

  • 2026-10-07: The impeller and traction mat sections now name Greg Pickren, CJ Lammers and Arno Olbricht, and the grates and patents sections name Don Moyle, who have Key Figures records since the third set; the mat section adds the reported sale of Hydro-Turf in October 2020 and the 2013 feature that also names Jet Strip. The page now says under its banner that the BaddJet shop sells RIVA Racing parts, because a BRP patent cited in the grates and patents sections lists a Riva Yamaha race grate among its references.
